Craig Dammeyer of Somers became the 29th member of Boy Scout Troop 376 to attain the rank of Eagle Scout—the highest rank in scouting. The ceremony was held Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church.

Dammeyer is a senior at Somers High School and began as a Boy Scout in May 2007. He officially became an Eagle Scout in April after carrying out a project at the Angle Fly Preserve on Route 139.

“My project consisted of scaling back the hill behind the new composting bathrooms at Angle Fly Preserve,” Dammeyer said. “We had to build a berm and then place a mat on the dirt hill with staples that were hammered in to prevent soil erosion.”

Dammeyer then dug planting holes with trowels in specified areas of the mat to maximize plant coverage and allow them room to grow. Finally, Dammeyer planted both Christmas (evergreen) and Lady Ferns in the holes with fertilizer, peat moss and water.

“My project only took one day to complete, but seven months to play,” Dammeyer said.
Dammeyer has earned 30 merit badges since becoming a Boy Scout, including recognition in archery, rifle shooting, first aid, cooking and carpentry.

Troop 376 was the third Boy Scout Troop to be formed in Somers. It was founded in 1992 and consisted of seven scouts and six adults—representing the number 376. The troop has grown considerably since its founding.
